Bariatric sleeve surgery or Vertical Band Gastroplasty is one form of bariatric surgery where the stomach continues to function normally although it’s size has been reduced. It is a restrictive form of surgery which 85% of the stomach is removed; however the nerves that innervate it remain intact to preserve its function. Unlike other forms of bariatric surgery, there are fewer side effects and restrictions in the diet because the stomach still functions normally like its pre operative state. Other forms of bariatric surgery involve total removal of the stomach which also generally removes all the hormones secreted by it to digest all types of food. With bariatric sleeve surgery, these hormones remain intact so the patient can likewise eat all types of food.
In a vertical gastric sleeve surgery, the stomach can accommodate 60-150 cc, so the only adjustment for the patient’s bariatric diet is the quantity of food intake but not the quality. The major principle for this type of surgery is purely restrictive. It causes weight loss by restricting the amount of food taken in by the patient. The stomach is restricted by stapling and reducing it vertically so the stomach looks like a banana or a cylinder.
Other facts about bariatric sleeve surgery
Bariatric sleeve surgery is also known as sleeve gastrectomy, greater curvature gastrectomy, vertical gastric sleeve, parietal gastrectomy, and vertical gastroplasty.
With this type of bariatric surgery, there is no intestinal bypass, only a restrictive procedure in the stomach. This makes it more advantageous than other forms of bypass surgery because it avoids side effects of an intestinal bypass such as ulcers, vitamin deficiencies and intestinal obstructions.
Unlike other types of bariatric surgery, vertical sleeve surgery is irreversible. Gastric bypass reversal is not possible since 85% of the stomach has already been removed. Other type such as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is reversible since the stomach is only divided and not removed. Reconnection is possible with this type of procedure. Therefore, the disadvantage of a vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery is its being irreversible so the patient should talk to the surgeon and decide carefully before undergoing the procedure.
